The Conservation Commission leads an exciting Earth Day event each year for town residents and visitors to enjoy and participate in a day commemorating the original Earth Day in 1970.
The Richmond celebration includes a town-wide cleanup where residents and friends go out to clean-up town roadways and other public or private community properties. Starting at determined location, participants sign up their planned clean-up locations, then pick up large recyclable leaf bags, gloves, water, and snacks before heading out to their destinations.
Once individual labeled bags are filled with recyclable materials versus trash, the bags are left in strategic locations along Town roads for Town Department of Public Works (DPW) staff to pick up and take the materials to the Richmond Transfer Station.
Along with the cleanup, each Earth Day celebration event includes mid-day fun and celebration at the Town Hall Green. Past events have included a Richmond student art contest for event T-shirts, bookmarks, and other items. Food and drink are available to participants, along with special conservation exhibits and vendors.
